Maybe the boss of the factory was just so fed up with workers' time-keeping that he or she devised a giant clock which sits astride great stilts-or maybe not. It could be a statement about the irony of the man hurrying up when really that big clock in the sky is saying we should slow down and appreciate every moment. This feeling of energised frenzy is for me enhanced by the painterly feel of the chimney-the energy of the paint strokes increase the urgency for this viewer.
